What is File Shredder?

File Shredder is a small utility that will completely erase the contents of sensitive files and folders that you specify. When you delete a file from Windows, Windows just mark the file as deleted in file allocation table, but the data of the file is still in your hard disk, there are many tools available which can let others easily recover your sensitive files. File Shredder using Security Options to completely overwrites the contents of a file and then deletes it. To shred files or folders just simply drag them to the File Shredder in the same way you would the Recycle Bin. <Top>

What is Secure Erasing?

When you delete a file from Windows, Windows just mark the file as deleted in file allocation table, but the data of the file is still in your hard disk, there are many tools available which can let others easily recover your sensitive files. Privacy Eraser Pro can overwrite file with character zeros, ones and random numbers, and you can set the number of times to use the erasing methods on the file. Please Note: The US Department of Defense recommends 3 overwrites, NSA recommends 7 overwrites. The more times you set to overwrites the file, the longer the erasing cycle will take. Usually, the default 1 times (3 passes) is enough.

What is index.dat?

This file used for folders: Temporary Internet Files, History, Cookies and more... It locked by system and can not be deleted. It contain information about files which cached. It do not contain files, but list of locations for them. <Top>

Why the index.dat files still exist after I erase them?

The index.dat files are always LOCKED during a Windows session and can not be deleted. Privacy Eraser Pro erases these files during a reboot before they become locked. After Windows has restarted, new files are automatically created with the same name but they contain no data. <Top>

When I start Internet Explorer it goes to a "xxxx" site. How can I get rid of this?

1) Click "Misc." Tab on Privacy Eraser Pro's main screen
2) Click "Internet Explorer Settings"
3) Change Internet Explorer Homepage
4) Click "Save" button <Top>

Why the some browser history still there after erasing?

It is strongly recommended that you shutdown all the programs that you want to erase, because some tracks can not be erased when these programs are running. For MSN, AOL and Netscape/Mozilla/Firefox, even you close all the windows of them, maybe their icons still on the system tray (lower right of the screen). Please check the system tray (lower right of your screen) to see if there is an icon of them, if you can find, you need to right click on it and close it before cleaning. <Top>

Why the Mediaplayer playlist are still there after I choose to erase them?

This maybe you keep Mediaplayer running when you erasing it, because Mediaplayer will save the playlist again when it shutdowns.
Important Note: It is strongly recommended that you shutdown all the programs that you want to erase, because some tracks can not be erased when these program are running. <Top>

Can Privacy Eraser Pro clean my files automatically when I start my computer?

Simply configure the General options on the Advanced Tab in Privacy Eraser Pro. In addition, please make sure the Load Privacy Eraser Pro at Windows Startup checkbox is checked. Please also note that in order for clearing to take place when you shutdown your computer, you must leave Privacy Eraser Pro running when you shutdown. This will not harm Privacy Eraser Pro or your computer. <Top>

How can I install Privacy Eraser Pro?

If you download Privacy Eraser Pro self-extracting setup file from Internet, just double click the setup file in Windows explorer and the setup will start. If you download the Privacy Eraser Pro zip package, please extract all files from the package into a temporary directory using your archiver, such as WinZip or WinRAR. Run the installation program, follow the instructions that appear on the screen. <Top>

How can I uninstall Privacy Eraser Pro?

There are two ways to uninstall Privacy Eraser Pro:
1. Make sure Privacy Eraser Pro is Closed, Right Click on the System Tray Icon (next to your clock) and click exit.
2. Click Start ->Programs-> Privacy Eraser Pro->Uninstall Privacy Eraser Pro
